Every other audio engineering job in town is either government propaganda, right-wing garbage, or NPR, and she’d rather die than be forced to care about politics. So she stays here, tuning out Black Jack’s angry rants, ignoring Cactus Jack’s stoner philosophizing, and rolling her eyes at Scotty’s conspiracy theories.

She is the sarcastic Greek chorus of Dry Heat—too exhausted to participate, too entertained to leave.

A man who wakes up pissed off and considers it a moral failure if he isn’t still pissed off by the end of the day.

Black Jack is a man with strong opinions, a short fuse, and an unshakable belief that if everyone just listened to him for five goddamn minutes, the world would be a better place. He’s a practicing Catholic—which means he spends half his time trying to be a good man and the other half struggling not to physically fight everyone around him.

He co-hosts Dry Heat with Cactus Jack, a man he simultaneously loves like a brother and wants to strangle every single day. He considers himself a logical, reasonable man, but has never once won an argument without yelling. His greatest weakness? Contradictions. He hates them, despises them, can’t let them slide.

He believes in law and order but despises bureaucrats.

He believes in Catholic guilt but refuses to admit he’s ever been wrong.

He wants people to respect him, but his temper keeps ruining everything.

He is Arizona distilled into a single man: proud, stubborn, God-fearing, and constantly fighting a war against the absurdity of the world.

Cactus Jack has been wandering the Arizona desert his whole life—not just physically, but spiritually, mentally, existentially. He’s the kind of guy who sits in a lawn chair on his front porch, beer in hand, watching the world fall apart with quiet amusement. If you asked him where he came from, he’d just shrug and say, “Around.” If you asked him where he’s going, he’d shrug again and say, “Wherever.”

He’s the co-host of Dry Heat, a ramshackle excuse for a talk radio show that mostly consists of Black Jack yelling about politics, Scotty screaming about lizard people, and Cecilia rolling her eyes in the background. Cactus Jack? He’s just there. He’s the guy who chimes in every once in a while with something weirdly profound, only to ruin it by following up with, “But, like, what do I know, man?”

Cactus Jack is the spiritual glue of Dry Heat. Not because he holds it together—he absolutely does not—but because without him, the energy would collapse in on itself. Black Jack is too angry, Scotty is too manic, Cecilia is too detached, and yet somehow, Cactus Jack is just enough of all those things to keep everything balanced.

He is the eye of the hurricane—calm, unbothered, watching everything swirl around him, never fully committing to anything, never letting anything get too serious. Because at the end of the day, nothing is that important. And if it is, he’ll deal with it tomorrow.
